It was in Kampala and on Christmas Eve 2015 when Bash proposed that we go for a Christmas dinner together with few of his friends. I was sort of expecting a special night, but I had no idea how special! I should begin by saying that Bash and I had talked about marriage in November, however I wasn’t expecting it to come that fast. Thus is was a big surprise for me and I also considered it my Christmas gift.
After a glass of wine, one of Bash’s friends wanted to hear how it all started. I then took my time to explain all the details I could remember. It was Bash’s turn to tell our friends how it all started, he then said part one which I have just explained was true and moving forward, he wanted everyone around the table to know that he had waited for me for years and now that he has found me, he will not waste any time telling stories. I saw Bash put his hands in his pocket and it came out with a ring, he got down on his knees and said to me ‘will you marry me?’ I burst into tears of joy before saying in a tiny voice ‘yes, honey, yes!’
We were the first two passengers checking-in with Ethiopian Airlines at Douala Airport in Cameroon on December 18th 2014. I was in front and turned to a beautiful lady behind me and asked, do you want to check in first? If yes then you can buy my space. She refused the offer because she didn’t want to pay for it, so I offered the space for free. She passed in front with a smile, the lady at the check-in counter whose name is also Cecilia asked if we wanted to sit together, we responded with a yes!.
Through the immigrations and waiting area the conversation continued and by the time we were on board we were already sharing our professional life, day-to-day life, past and present relationship stories. I enjoyed talking to Cece and I’m sure she did too, soon we arrived at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, I was connecting to Kampala while Cece was connecting to Washington. In transit in Addis Ababa we exchanged contacts. We weren’t sure we’ll meet again but wanted to stay in touch. We posed for this picture (see left) and went our separate ways.
A week later we reconnected, at first it was all casual but the call frequency increased every day! One day Bash broke the iceberg by calling me honey. I was like, what did you just say? He replied, I said honey; it’s time we stop pretending, I’m sure we are in love and it’s time to confess. From that day, the conversation became a romantic conversation and we could stay on phone for hours. Our sleeping patterns changed due to the time difference as Bash had to wait for me to return from work, have few hours chat before going to bed.
We were growing closer and closer my heart was very settled and convinced that I had finally located my missing rib! After four months, we arranged to meet in Douala so I could meet Cece’s friends and family members and then we travelled to Buea to meet Cece’s kids. In November 2015 I travelled to Maryland to meet Cece’s mum and then to Florida to meet her elder brother to declare my intentions. This was followed by telephone calls to the rest of the family members to declare my intentions.
One month later, December 2015 we both flew into Addis and met at the airport, this time we didn’t go our different directions; we flew together to Kampala, Uganda to meet Bash’s kids who were studying in Kampala. February 2016, Bash paid his second visit to Maryland, by that this time we had now agreed to spend the rest of our lives together. He was to meet my Mum to set dates for our traditional, civil and church weddings.
On 4th May 2016 we travelled to Bali and on 7th May 2016 I asked for Cece’s hand in marriage and received the blessings of her parents. Today we are best friends and we can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together as a couple and a family.
I am the son of Bashiru Bah and Amie Feika. I have one biological sister, Bintu Bah and quite a number of brothers and sisters from other mothers.
I grew up in Kenema town, eastern province of the Republic of Sierra Leone. Between ages 18 and 20 I lived in Tongo in Kenema district and Koidu town in Kono district doing various unskilled jobs. At age 20 I moved to Guinea where I spent 10 years and where I completed my university studies and started skilled job life. Since age 24 I have worked and lived in Guinea, Liberia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger, Sierra Leone and Central African Republic managing support systems or operations for 4 International NGOs and 2 United Nation Agencies. I left my last duty station on the last day of April 2016 to join my love and best friend Cece to plan for our big day, and to spend the rest of our lives under the same roof.
I was born and grew up in Bali Nyonga, North-West Province, Cameroon. I am the third of five children from my parents. And the second among the girls but I’m sometimes treated as a boy and the first. Growing up was very interesting though with lots of challenges as I lost my dad at an early age, a big credit to my mum for supporting us. I went to school in Bali up to High School level, then I moved to Buea for my university studies.
I grew up to be self-motivated and as a little girl I always dreamt of getting married one day, to someone that I love. Though it took years, and lots of challenges to find that true love I had always dreamt of, today I’m excited and feel blessed to finally meet the love of my life and can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him.
